About the SOAS Min’yo Group

We are a group of people who meet at SOAS, University of London, to learn Japanese folk songs (min’yo) – You don’t need to be a SOAS student to join us!

We have singers, shamisen players, shakuhachi players, percussionists, flute players and dancers. Some members are very experienced and are fluent in Japanese, while others are beginners and may not speak the language.

Since our formation in 2012, we have performed regularly at the Japan Matsuri in Trafalgar Square, at Sheffield and Durham Universities, the Southbank Centre, and at the Japanese embassy in London. We’ve even been lucky enough to play in Denmark!
